The
5 topics covered in this CD are:
Section 1: Considering Health Care Perceptions
As the song goes, “One man’s ceiling is another
man’s floor,” and in the case of your older patients,
“What is intolerable to a 40-year old may be just fine
for an 80-year old”. The only way to learn what is acceptable
and what is not is to communicate directly with a person and
his or her caregivers.
Section 2: Listening to Older Patients
This section of the course provides many tips on ways to communicate
with older patients that are respectful, informative and effective.
Section 3: Talking about Sensitive Subjects
This section gives an overview of techniques such as empathy,
anecdotes and open ended questions for broaching sensitive
subjects such as:
-
incontinence
-
sexuality
-
elder abuse and mental illness, and
-
problems related to safety and independence -- such as giving
up one’s driver’s license or moving to assisted
living.
Section 4: Encouraging Prevention and Wellness
Healthy aging, once an oxymoron, is now the goal of geriatric
care. This section addresses ways to encourage older patients
to exercise and maintain their optimal mental and physical
health.
Section 5: Working with Ethnically Diverse Older Patients
Appreciating the richness of cultural and ethnic backgrounds
among older patients can help to promote good health care.
Culturally sensitive communication skills will enable you
to listen closely to what your patients are saying, regardless
of their cultural background.
