Course Overview

This course presents an overview of addiction. We present the entire disease process, from diagnosis to treatment options. We will examine the various traditional and complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatments that exist for addiction. We will highlight different types of addiction including substance abuse (prescription and illicit drugs) and behavioral addiction. We will also explore addiction amongst several different populations.

  1. Describe the disease process of addiction and identify the characteristics of an addictive personality.

  2. Explain the changes found in DSM-5 around the criteria of addiction, including behavioral addiction

  3. Discuss the difficulty of substance abuse and the recent opioid crisis.

  4. List treatment options for substance addictions, including complementary and alternative medicine.

  5. Compare and contrast substance addiction and behavioral addiction

  6. Identify the characteristics of those addicted to power and adrenalin and how those addictions can be both beneficial and burdensome.
