Course Overview

In this course, we will present a detailed plan for a Vocational Counselor assisting in the job search process with clients that have more severe disabilities and require additional assistance with Job Readiness training. First, we will discuss how to help a VR client choose the right jobs to apply for, and give a brief synopsis of employment skills. Next, we will summarize the important factors for VR clients to consider before applying for jobs and disclosure of disability to potential employers. We will point out the differences between a “traditional” case progression and one that does not follow the expected timeline in the VR process. We will look at some common intellectual, emotional, psychological, and psychosocial disabilities that cause limitations in the Job Readiness process and workplace. Finally, we will develop a strategy for helping these clientele progress through the Job Readiness process by focusing on the three most important aspects of searching for employment: application, resume, and interview. Case study examples will present real world situations with an example plan to help the VR client move through the VR process successfully.

Course Objectives

  1. Explain job readiness and employment skills in relation to clients with more severe intellectual, emotional, psychological, and psychosocial disabilities. Discuss the differences in the VR process with these clientele.

  2. Summarize and discuss the seven basic skill sets and work-related, transferrable, and personal skills.

  3. Summarize the preparation needed to be ready to begin searching for a job, choosing a field, and disclosing disability to potential employers. Point out the major differences in the "traditional" and more complex "Job Readiness" process.

  4. Discuss common intellectual, emotional, psychological, and psychosocial disabilities and their limitations in job searching and obtaining employment. Discuss ways to deal with these limitations.

  5. Give specific examples of ways to assist the VR client in successfully completing employment applications, creating a resume, and interviewing with potential employers.

  6. Discuss case study examples and creating a strategy for helping these clientele reach their employment goals.
