Section 1: Introduction to Nursing Law and Ethics
Chapter 1. American Jurisprudence - the principles of preventing health care problems are addressed by demonstrating the legal principles from which both the client's rights and parameters of nursing practice are derived.
Chapter 2. Legal Terminology - provides the nurse with the basis with which to address health care issues in clear, understandable language.
Chapter 3. The Nurse and the Legal System - provides the nurse with the understanding of the legal process necessary for planning to deal with health care issues within the legal system and identifying specific objectives and mechanisms to achieve successful resolution of the health care problem.
Chapter 4. Ethics in Nursing - identifies ethical issues in health care that the nurse may face within the practice setting.
Section 2: Nursing Practice and the Legal System
Chapter 5. Defining Nursing Practice - helps the nurse plan for practicing nursing within its legal parameters, by identifying the roles and responsibilities within the practice of nursing.
Chapter 6. Elements of Nursing Negligence - helps the nurse plan for and effectively deal with the client's rights and wishes, to prevent the occurrence of any of the elements of nursing negligence.
Chapter 7. Negligence Specific to Nursing - prepares the nurse to anticipate and plan for future problems or issues that commonly arise in nursing practice.

Chapter 12. Informed Consent - identifies elements of the nurse's role when informed consent is provided, which if not properly executed, results in one of the greatest risks for palpractice.

Chapter 13. Nursing Law and Employment Issues in Nursing - identifies employment issues that cause the greatest risk of liability within management.
Chapter 14. Managed Care and the Law - identifies economic issues that cause the greatest risk of liability for health care providers.
Chapter 15. Alternate Dispute Resolution in Nursing - identifies a cost-effective non-adversarial mechanism that patient and provider may utilize to address and/or minimize risks and issues of health care outside the court system. Within the preventive law paradigm, Gorem also identifies alternate dispute resolution as a mechanism that facilitates cutting losses.

Chapter 17. Advanced Practice Nursing - identifies and examines the roles and issues related to advance practice nursing so that the nurse can clearly understand the complexity of problems that arise in this practice arena.
Chapter 18. Home Health Nursing
(1) identifies and examines the roles and issues related to home health care nursing, so that the nurse can clearly understand, anticipate and plan for the complexity of problems that may arise;
(2) provides an understanding of rights and needs of home health care patients, promoting a win/win philosophy; and
(3) provides a basis to support issues critical to home health care patients when utilizing alternative dispute mechanisms to negotiate their rights and needs.
Chapter 19. Long-Term Care Nursing - encompasses the same three areas of discussion as Chapter 18, but with respect to long-term care.

Section 6: Nursing Law and Forensics
Chapter 22. Forensic Nursing - identifies and examines the roles and issues related to these types of forensic nursing, so that the nusre can clearly understand the complexity of problems that arise in these practice arenas.
Chapter 23. Life Care Planning
Chapter 24. Violence - this chapter as well as the following 2 chapters, is structured like those in the previous part. It identifies issues related to the occurrence of vilence, outlines the rights of both nurses and patients, and discusses issues that arise when utilizing alternative dispute mechanisms.
Chapter 25. Telecommunications - this chapter has been included in this section because it is an area where legal issues are evolving and frequently arise and it is commonly used by the correctional system.
Chapter 26. Correctional Nursing - lastly, this chapter gives a comprehensive overview of the legal issues involved in this specialized nursing practice.
