This course is chapters 6 through 8 of Substance Use Disorder Treatment for People With Co-Occurring Disorders, Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) Series, No. 42. This treatment protocol is offered by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and was updated in March 2020.

This course features the treatment recommendations for those in special populations including the homeless, those in the criminal justice system, women, and racial/ethnic minorities. Healthcare professionals need to be aware of specific treatment needs of such populations and make adjustments in their assessment, diagnosis, referral, and service provision.

There is an overview of treatment models and settings for clients with CODs, as well as services across a multitude of inpatient and outpatient settings. This course also addresses the anticipated gaps in the behavioral health workforce and what behavioral healthcare professionals and organizations can do to protect the existing workforce and recruit new members.
