Course Overview

In this course, we will present depression, focusing on its varying causes and treatment options. Depression is indiscriminant and effects many people regardless of sex, gender, ethnicity, and class. With this, we will highlight common ways depression presents in men, women, children, teens and older adults. We will also touch on how culture impacts and influences how depression manifests and is treated. There is a section focusing on Veterans’ issues. We will present suggestions around the current medical system in terms of early assessment and differing treatments, including complementary and alternative treatments for depression. There are three case studies included for the students to review and several tools for the student to use in their practice for assessment and discussion regarding depression.

  1. Explain depression, its symptoms and varying treatment options including complementary and alternative medicine

  3. Discuss how depression presents differently in elderly, veterans, and adolescents

  4. State the unique challenges of depression in the Asian culture

  5. Describe the benefits and burdens of social media as it relates to depression

  6. Discuss the ways primary care providers can implement changes to their practice to assess and treat depression
