Course Overview
This class will present the HIPAA law, including the privacy
and security rules, and the exemption for Workers Compensation. We will also
address the focus of the Office of Civil Rights for 2017 and special
circumstances involving the HIPAA law, including HIV, LGBT communities, the
cloud computing and information on the opioid epidemic and HIPAA. Also presented is the final rule for the
Federal Policy for the Protection of Human Subjects, also called The Common
Rule, which went into effect in January 2019. There have been some changes made
affecting those in healthcare for 2020, including a change in operating systems
(Windows 7). Social media and telemedicine are also raising questions regarding
privacy and confidentiality. Included are the HIPPA requirements for portable
devices.

- Describe the HIPAA law and its components
- List those entities that are required to follow HIPAA law and those who are considered business associates under the HIPAA law
- State the one exception to the HIPAA law requirements
- State the two objectives for 2017 for the Office of Civil Rights in relationship to HIPAA law
- Discuss special situations regarding the HIPAA law including HIV, LGBT communities, cloud computing and the opioid epidemic
- Explain the new "Common Rule" and its effective changes in research under HIPPA
- Present the new requirements for computer systems and HIPPA rules regarding portable devices used in patient care
