Women experience hormonal fluctuations that can contribute to an increased risk of depression; however, hormones are only one piece of a much larger puzzle. Numerous biological, psychological, and social factors make women more susceptible to depression than men. While standard treatments for depression, such as medication and psychotherapy, have remained largely unchanged over the past several decades, emerging research shows promise. Notably, older medications are being revisited for their effectiveness in treating depression in women, and a newly FDA-approved medication specifically for postpartum depression highlights the progress being made in this area. In addition, many individuals are turning to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) approaches for managing depression. Current research suggests that some of these methods may offer relief and could play a role in comprehensive treatment strategies. This course will explore all of these topics to provide a well-rounded understanding of depression in women and the evolving treatment landscape.
